Tour from Balestrand
This tour gives you a unique chance to understand how glaciers work, and the situation of glaciers today. You take a passenger ferry from Balestrand to up the Fjærlandsfjord to Mundal, visit the Glacier Museum and continue on to a part of the Jostedalsbreen glacier.
The ferry ride takes an hour and 40 minutes. Just after leaving Balestrand, the boat makes a short stop to pick up passengers in Hella. When you arrive in Mundal, at the end of the fjord, you are met by a bus that takes you to the Norwegian Glacier Museum and Ulltveit-Moe climate centre. There you have about an hour to visit. Then the bus goes to an arm of the Jostedalsbreen glacier. On the half-day tour you visit Bøyabreen, where you have a 25 minute photo stop. On the full-day tour, the bus makes a longer stop at Bøyabreen, and it also stops at Supphellebreen.
After the glacier visit, the bus goes back to the harbor in Mundal. On the half-day tour you get right back on the boat, but on the full-day tour you have two hours and ten minutes to visit the Norwegian Book Town. Here there are about 300 residents, but many thousands of books. There are small used bookstores in many old buildings: the ferry waiting room, bank, post office, and grocery store. The boat returns to Balestrand in time for the 16:55 Express Boat to Bergen.
More About the Tour
Lunch is not included, but can be purchased several places along the way: on the boat, at the glacier museum, and at Bøyabreen (on the full-day tour).
You don’t walk on the glacier on this tour.
The temperature by the glacier is not much colder than in the village, so you do not need to bring special clothes. (The viewpoint at Supphellebreen is only 60 meters above sea level, and the viewpoint by Bøyabreen is only 150 meters above sea level.)
There are restrooms at the Glacier Museum, Supphellebreen, and at Bøyabreen.
At Bøyabreen you can take a short walk on a gravel path closer to the glacier.
The ferry has indoor and outdoor seating decks.
